Starting Over
So, I made the switch from one on-line college to Walden, and I am THRILLED with my choice. Although I loved the other college, early childhood courses were not offered until the end (the last 4 courses). I already feel a part of Walden, and I feel connected to the other students in the class. AND... I met my professor at NAEYC, which was super exciting! My biggest challenges are are differences between both schools, especially with postings and specifics... they are totally different. But... I'm not complaining (well maybe a teeny-tiny bit)! All I have to do now is re-arrange my thinking and re-evaluate my week so I can get everything done on time; now, that's a challenge indeed!

Hi Lois
ReplyDeleteI am from Tampa, FL, I was also at NAEYC, but unlike you, I did not have the opportunity to meet our professor. NAEYC was a great event, best conference I ever been. Already planning to go to Atlanta next year.
Marta, it was SO awesome to meet him! I really wanted to attend his workshop, but mine was right before his. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I was networking for over 1/2 hour after my workshop ended.
ReplyDeleteI hope that I'm able to present again in Atlanta. My first NAEYC conference was in Atlanta, and without a doubt, it was my favorite. One night, about 50 people went outside by this fountain at the convention center, and we sang children's songs under the stars, while drinking hot chocolate. It was a wonderful experience; just so inspiring and fun.
Lois, I love Walden. I recently graduated with my B.S. in Child Development from Walden. I could not see myself sitting in a classroom at this point in my life. Online classes have helped me to maintain stability in my life. I love my university. I have led 3 of my colleagues to the college.
ReplyDeleteGood for YOU, Angela! I agree, although still a bit skeptical, that I could not sit in a classroom at this point in my life. My biggest challenge is organizing my life to put aside specific time to do school work, laundry (OK, I can skip that!), my other 2 jobs, and of course, taking time to breathe. I'm working on sticking to a schedule, which is also a challenge for me. BUT... I love EVERYTHING about Walden. I feel connected to the school, my colleagues, and the material that is being shared.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that you have a full schedule. Remember you have to take time for you. What good is it to get an education, work a job and you are too tired to enjoy life. We can easily get burned out. I am thankful to have older children that help me around the house. My husband is a school bus driver, so he has more flexibility during the week to get household chores finished. Good Luck! I know you will balance everything.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, Angela! I do have a full schedule, but I would not have it any other way. Presenting workshops for early childhood professionals has been a dream of mine, and without the help of my family, it would never have become a reality.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is retired, so he has become an important part of my company. He probably is working more now! He helps with everything in the house and never complains... my son actually moved back home this year to save some money, so he has been a tremendous support, too. It's all good... just different.
I do not think that I will get burned out, because I love this challenge. I'm a survivor, for sure. Life is too short, Angela, not to take time to smell the roses, I guess. Right now, I'm just trying to find balance on the scale, without being such a perfectionist!
AND... as I am responding to your post, I just made a decision. I'm going to Orlando the week of Thanksgiving to present 2 all-day Head Start workshops. And, you know what, my husband and I will go a day early to visit Mickey Mouse! Yep, that's just what we'll do!!!!
Thanks for your response, Angela; I feel as if I'm making some wonderful new friends thanks to Walden.
